Hi, I am Dr Anne Kruger, one of the specialist Anaesthesiologists working with Drs Marais and Broeze.
I have a special interest in opioid free/sparing anaesthesia and will tailor this specifically to the type of anaesthetic you will need.
The opioid group of drugs include morphine, omnopon, pethidine and tramal. These are associated with many potential adverse events such as:
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation
- A decrease in blood pressure
- Hallucinations
Any of these may compromise your surgery and may even contribute to a longer in-hospital stay.
The vast majority of the types of surgery your surgeon performs lends itself particularly well to opioid free anaesthesia.
Your safety and comfort are a priority. If I feel you require an opioid for pain control, then I will use it. But usually in these situations very little is required and hence the side effect profile is limited.
No anaesthetic is entirely risk free. However, I will discuss this when I see you beforehand.

Dr. Ortega's journey in medicine commenced in 1995 when she graduated as a Medical Doctor with honors from Camaguey, Cuba.
She honed her skills during her residency in Anaesthesiology at the University Hospital in Ciego de Avila, Cuba until 1999.
In 1999, Dr. Ortega transitioned to South Africa, where she immersed herself in anaesthesia and intensive care at Pietersburg Provincial Hospital. Her experience included handling major trauma cases both within hospital settings and during medical helicopter transports.
Seeking further professional development, Dr. Ortega pursued training at the University of the Witwatersrand Faculty of Health Sciences, earning a Fellowship in Anaesthesiology from the College of Medicine of South Africa in 2011.
At Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Dr. Ortega served as a Consultant Anaesthesiologist, contributing to the development of the hospital's Massive Blood Transfusion Protocol and overseeing trauma operating theaters.
Later, as the director of anesthesia services at Netcare Milpark Academic Private Hospital, Dr. Ortega continued her dedication to trauma care.
Currently, Dr. Ortega practices as an anaesthesiologist in Johannesburg, serving at various prominent centers including Netcare Milpark Trauma Unit and the Johannesburg Surgical Hospital.
Beyond clinical practice, Dr. Ortega shares her expertise internationally as a faculty instructor for DSTC/DATC™ courses. She is an active member of several professional societies and has made significant contributions to medical literature, particularly in trauma Anaesthesia.
Dr. Ortega's professional interests lie in damage control surgery, resuscitation, massive transfusion, and coagulopathy in trauma cases. Her commitment to patient care and ongoing professional development underscores her impact in anaesthesiology and trauma surgery.
Dr. Nicole Carreira

I specialize in a variety of anaesthetic techniques, including opiate-free anaesthesia, which helps enhance recovery while minimizing side effects.
My proficiency extends to complex cases involving complex laparoscopic and robotic surgery, as well as ENT, neurosurgery, plastic surgery, and orthopaedic surgery.
I am very proud to be collaborating closely with Dr Marais and Dr Broeze, to ensure that each patient receives the highest standard of care, tailored to their specific needs.
My goal is to deliver a seamless anaesthetic experience that supports successful surgical interventions and promotes rapid recovery.
